Colonel Gray Classic – Nov. 29 & 30

Posted on: November 26th, 2013 by rcfleming

Colonel Gray basketball finally hits the court this weekend as the lady Colonels host the 37th edition of the Colonel Gray Classic. Six of the best teams in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia join defending PEI Champions, Three Oaks and the host Colonels, in an early season test of powerhouses. Venues include the Colonel Gray High School gym and the new Holland College gym, with tournament passes costing $5.

The tournament kicks off Friday afternoon with Colonel Gray facing Leo Hayes High School from Fredericton. Leo Hayes is coming off a finals appearance in their own tournament and has several games under their belt. The Colonels are looking to rebound from the past two seasons where, despite being racked by a series of season ending injuries to key players, they have taken a silver medal in the provincial finals. Newcomers Jenna Mae Ellsworth, a national caliber point guard, and Jada Yeo will start as grade tens and six foot Taylor Meek will add a major presence in the paint after losing last season to injury. Kendra Craswell, a three point specialist, and top scorer Victoria Barbour round out the starters. Other members of the Gray squad include sisters Edna and Patricia Nino-Esparza, Bailey Andrews, Sarah Peters, Blendina Avdija and Emily White. Grays coaching staff of Chris Annett, Reagh Viditi and Alex Fields are excited with this current version of the Colonels. “We will be able to do some things that we have been missing in the past couple of seasons due to injury and should be very competitive” stated Annett.

The second match of the day has two storied New Brunswick programs, Riverview High School, out of the Moncton area, and defending New Brunswick champions, Fredericton High School, facing off at 5:00. The two teams met previously in the year, with Riverview taking the win but the Black Cats won the Tournament by dropping the Leo Hayes Lions in the final after advancing to the semi finals on point differential. The FHS squad features a number of Canada Games players.

PEI Champion Three Oaks play Sussex Regional High in the third match-up of the day, in what is a rematch of the Dairy Town final from last season. Sussex is reported to be among the top teams in New Brunswick this season while Three Oaks faces a rebuilding season. TOSH lost a close 51-44 decision to Fredericton last weekend, so they promise to have a strong squad this season again.

The final match of the evening sees perennial powerhouse Horton High, from Nova Scotia, locking horns with Bernice McNaughton, out of Moncton. McNaughton was provincial runner up in New Brunswick and is strong again this season.
